About the Institution
The UNBC story began in January 1987, at a public meeting, held at the College of New Caledonia, on the possibility of extending degree-awarding opportunities in Prince George. By the fall of 1987, after around a dozen meetings, it had became apparent that there was considerable enthusiasm for the creation of a full university in the north, and on December 1, 1987, the Interior University Society (IUS) was incorporated under the Societies Act. This Society swiftly expanded, to include Directors representing the whole northern region. February saw an important milestone in the University's endeavours to gain bursaries and scholarships to students: the raising of the first million dollars in the North to the Future campaign. This campaign was established to create a permanent legacy of ten million dollars of government-matchable funds. March saw the conclusion of phase 1 of construction of the Prince George campus. In May, the details of the second year of the "QuickStart" program, which had been greatly expanded, were announced. A major expansion of University staff took place in July, with the intake of some 30 new faculty members. July also saw receipt of the largest federal grant to date - a $200,000 award to assist in the development of cooperative education at the University. By the fall of 1993, with faculty, officers, and students in place, it was possible to create a Senate, and the Interim Governing Council was thus able to hand over its powers to a Board of Governors and UNBC Senate. 1994 saw the culmination of the years of planning and effort. In May, the first UNBC students graduated: six students from the "Quickstart" program received their degrees from the Governor General. In August, the Prince George campus was ceremonially opened by Her Majesty the Queen, at a nationally televised event which saw some 10,000 people visit the Prince George campus. In September, the University opened fully, with around 1,500 students enrolled. To commemorate the opening, a full-colour coffee-table book, "A University is Born", was published by the UNBC Press.
